Twenty-one Stories

I have not read any Graham Greene for a while and had forgotten what a clever and distinctive writer he is although some of the stories reminded me a little of Orwell in their wry observation of the pathos and desperation of the human condition. I was also surprised at the chilling, psychological horror of one story in particular, it reminded me very much of Shirley Jackson. Some I felt petered out a little but then it's nice to use your own imagination and some were downright quirky. I would not recommend this collection as an introduction to Greene, I think it would only suit a fairly seasoned Greene reader. But as I am, I thoroughly enjoyed them.
