by Jeremias Gotthelf
Rating: ****
I really enjoyed this story, my version is by Jeremias Gotthelf.
Very well-written, a sense of impending doom and foreboding is realised from the opening despite the pastoral narrative. I have read versions of this before but this story is neatly-contained and really creepy in places. Aside from the morality message, I was left a bit itchy and looking over my shoulder. Absolutely recommended, the style of writing may not be for everyone; it almost seems a pastiche of olde-worlde Gothic Germanic horror and I had to remind myself it's contemporary.
I found it hard to put down and read it over the course of twenty-four hours - highly recommended.
