The Long Good-bye (Philip Marlowe Series Book 6)

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

by Raymond Chandler

Rating: ***

I really enjoyed the majority of this book. The writing is fresh, stylised, deceptively poetic and clever in places and zips along. I struggled to put down a large part of the novel and could not wait to pick up again. Chandler sets the tone and envelops you in early 50s America without sounding forced and without you realising it. I was also surprised that, on the whole, the writing did not sound dated really despite a lot of the 50s references. I was torn between giving this 3 or 4 stars - I wish I could make it 3.5! Reason: I found the ending disappointing and slightly lazy. I also think it went on too long and began, almost imperceptibly to lose way a little, I found I becoming a little bored. A couple of scenes and plot turns towards the end I thought out of character with the rest of novel and unnecessary.
